INSECURITY IN IMO: From Prison Reform to Prison Break ~ Adaora Onyechere

On TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2019. Imo State Government under the administration of His Excellency, Rt. Hon Emeka Ihedioha CON, KSC flagged off a REFORMATION AND RE-ORIENTATION PROGRAMME FOR JUVENILE Offenders, in partnership with the NIGERIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICE in the state with key focus on welfare, empowerment, mental health and reintegration into the society and making the state safer and secured.

Fast-forward to the early hours of 5 April 2021, the BREAKING NEWS changed the narratives from prison reform to prison break, it was reported that a mass prison break had occurred in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.

Now one begs to questions how the security architecture and apparatus had become porous for news to air that a large armed group arrived in pickup trucks and on buses carrying rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns and rifles…the audacity and handling of arms in this episode in our noble Imo state can only be relatable to war zones.

Now there are over 1,844 inmates from the jail walking the streets of Imo State on identified.

A state that was syncing her resources, ministries and bonding with partnering agencies to reform her Correctional facilities has total found herself in a comatose conodrum.

We call on government as a matter of urgency to review her programme and protocols to incubate and activate a robust security architecture that is modelled to secure lives and properties in our communities.
